Elders Of Nishnabe Aski Nation Gather To Discuss Development Of A Traditional Knowledge Protocol In Fort Severn On May 12, 13, 14.
The discussions began with a presentation by Bryce Edwards, Legal Council for Nishnawbe Aski Nation, on the current Canadian laws that affect Traditional Knowledge. Bryce clarified how the Canadian systems do not recognize Aboriginal law or Aboriginal authority to make law. Dr. M.A. Peggy Smith, R.P.F. of Lakehead University presented an Academic view of Traditional Knowledge. She related those sites across Canada where the governments worked in collaboration with Aboriginal people to protect and sustain the forest, the land. One of the examples was the White Feather forest which is in NAN territory. The final presenter was Merle Alexanderan Aboriginal lawyer from British Columbia. He related how Traditional Knowledge can be protected and perhaps preserved through a protocol.
The Elders in attendance appreciated the knowledge they were gaining and expressed hope for the future generations. In this new found hope they began the work in developing a Traditional Knowledge protocol. They understood that this would be a tool to protect Traditional Knowledge. The Elders also understood that this protocol, being a negotiated agreement between the government and First Nation participants, would essentially become a combined law respecting both Canadian Law and Aboriginal Law.
The next meeting to work on this is tentatively set for July.
