Structure of Oski-Machiitawin
The NAN Chiefs, by resolution, mandate the Oski-Machiitawin Chiefs' Steering Committee to direct and guild the process along with the NAN Executive (Grand Chief).
The Chiefs' Steering Committee is comprised of a Chief and alternate from each Tribal Council and independent First Nations, Tribal Council representatives and Elders also give guidance to the process.
The Oski-Machiitawin Technical Tables, comprised of community members, experts, and Technical Leads meet to do research and flush out issues and options for the Chiefs Steering Committee in the areas of Parks, Land Use Planning, Mining, Licenses and Permits, and Common Issues. Resource Revenue Sharing (RRS) research and discussions originally took place under the OM RRS table but have been moved out from Oski-Machiitawin to become a separate process as per Chiefs Resolution 08/61. The NAN technical tables also meet with the province's technicians to work on the issues and develop options, recommendations, draft protocols and draft agreements, for consideration by the Chiefs Steering Committee and NAN First Nations.
The negotiating Team, consisting of the Lead Negotiator, Tribal Council representatives and an Elder, meet with the Assistant Deputy Ministers of MNR, MNDM and MAA, to discuss and negotiate agreements and memorandums of understanding that will be reflected in Ontario policy and legislation. This forum is called the Joint Management Committee.
The NAN Negotiating Team and the NAN Grand Chief will also meet with the Ministers, and if necessary, the Premier to resolve issues.
Support staff act as a secretariat to the Oski-Machiitawin process by planning and organizing meetings and travel, preparing documents, recording minutes, developing information materials to share with the communities, developing work plans and budgets, and writing reports.
The OM Coordinator coordinates the process from the Nishnawbe Aski Nation office in Thunder Bay.
